This introductory module discusses why it's important to have a good grounding knowledge in cria care and the consequences of not having that knowledge.
In this module, we will discuss the specific preparations that you can make for the cria season. How to ensure that crias are born healthy (care of the dam) and specific preparations for looking after newborn crias, with contingency planning!
It's crucial to be familiar with what is normal for newborns before you can recognise what is abnormal. Here we will also cover the routine procedures you should be doing in the first day or so.
Congenital problems are those that crias are born with. These may be genetically acquired or not. There are a number of important congenital problems to be aware of so that you can recognise them and know what to do if they occur.
One of the most important things the newborn cria needs to do is eat! Here we talk about the sort of problems that may arise if a cria doesn't nurse from its dam initially, or it fails to consume sufficient colostrum. We also discuss how these problems can be recognised and managed, potentially with the assistance of your veterinarian.
Premature crias are a special case and require some more pro-active care. We will talk about how to recognise the features of prematurity and dys-maturity, and what might need to be done to support them.
Diarrhoea during the neonatal period can be a real issue. Fluid losses from tiny bodies can lead to dehydration quite rapidly so it's important to act fast. There are a number of potential causes of diarrhoea in crias, both infectious and non-infectious. We'll talk about diagnostics and care, as well as how to handle these cases from a biosecurity perspective.
Crias can have a number of potential limb deformities. Here we discuss what those are, what might cause them, how to manage them and how to prevent them.
If more than one person from your family or farm would like to take the course, discounted pricing is available. Please ask.
